These two lovely figures which are assumed to be from the late Qing dynasty period of 1895 to about 1912 are beautifully well carved and appear to be of an emperor or scholar and his maidservant holding an umbrella or parasol. Both are carved out of either boxwood or rosewood and then gilded as was done in many cases but rare and hard to find. The gilding that is left and visible has darkened with age but most of it is worn and much has rubbed off. The only real damage present is the male’s right foot which has broken off and is missing, but is hardly noticeable and does not affect him standing.
